MFON Global Symposium

MFON and Photoville, in partnership with MPB, Open Society Foundations, and Parsons, School of Art, Media & Technology at The New School present the inaugural MFON Global Symposium, curated and moderated by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn and Adama Delphine Fawundu.

 

The two-part symposium consists of a one-day, in-person, series of panel discussions at Parsons, The New School in New York City (June 15, 2024) and a virtual assembly of artists and intellectuals (October 1, 2024).

Collective Energy: A Virtual Gathering was a virtual assembly of artists and intellectuals moderated by Adama Delphine Fawundu and Laylah Amatullah Barrayn. Panelists discussed the global impact and need for photography collectives when it comes to women photographers.

Participants

African Women in Photography founder Sarah Waiswa. AWP is an organisation/community dedicated to elevating and celebrating the work of women and non binary photographers from Africa.

Black Women Photographers Executive Director Beth Irũngũ. BWP is a global community and database of Black women and non-binary photographers.

Foto Feminas founder Veronica Sanchis. Foto Feminas is an online platform to promote the works of Latin American and Caribbean women photographers.

Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) founder & director Aldeide Delgado. WOPHA is an organization founded to research, promote, support, and educate on the role of women in photography.

Presence & Preservation

Presence & Preservation was the inaugural MFON Global Symposium, curated by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn and Adama Delphine Fawundu, at Parsons, The New School in New York City.

 

The one-day symposium, which took place on June 15, 2024, included a series of panel discussions, featuring scholars, artists, curators and centered around archiving and elevating the voices of women and non-binary of photographers of African descent, as part of Photoville’s annual Festival in New York City.

This cutting-edge and inspiring group of artists share their perspectives that transcend mere documentation to provoke thought and action, driven by their innovative catalogues of documentary photography and photojournalism.
