Down & Dirty

Janette Beckman

In 2014 we invited photographer Jamel Shabazz to curate our Photoville Opening Night—We Live In Brooklyn, Baby —and had a magical time working with Jamel and the 40+ photographers who participated in this visual love letter to our beloved Borough.

This year we decided it was time to celebrate musicians and the photographers who capture those
crazy and candid moments we all have stuck to our bedroom wall or pasted to our school books. Who better to curate such a night than the fearless iconic music photographer Janette Beckman—who, might we add, is a rockstar herself.

It’s been such a magnificent journey and we’d like to thank Janette for bringing her passion and beautiful self to this project as well as inviting such an incredible team of photographers to be a part of this evening.

We have also installed a special exhibition featuring all of these powerful images and just to make sure you don’t miss it, we invited celebrated street artists Cey Adams and Queen Andrea to “Mash-Up” two giant, iconic images of LL Cool J and Chuck D by—who else—Janette Beckman… Rock on all, rock on…

A limited-edition commemorative newspaper was also available at the exhibition container.

A big thank you to Julie Grahame, Ken Kobland, and Amanda Gorence for all their help in making this happen!
