Don’t Look Away

Boston University

The toll of war, its brutality and suffering, is challenging to capture in words. Less so, in photographs, the best of which reveal the magnitude of pain and destruction in ways that are difficult to view but important to see.

Freelance photographer Carol Guzy bravely enters battle zones to show the world what it truly means to be at war. The images are deeply disturbing and utterly essential. For her highly decorated career, and for her highly decorated career, she has been awarded Boston University’s Hugo Shong Lifetime Achievement Award. These images from Ukraine are an example of her work.

Carol Guzy

Recipient of BU College of Communication Hugo Shong Award

Carol Guzy specializes in long-form documentary human interest projects and news stories, both domestic and international and is currently a contract photographer with ZUMA Press.

Carol is the first journalist to receive four Pulitzers. Her fourth and most recent Pulitzer was for coverage of the Haitian earthquake in 2010. Previously, Carol was honored twice with the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for her coverage of the military intervention in Haiti and the devastating mudslide in Armero, Colombia. She received a third Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for her work in Kosovo.

She was named Photographer of the Year for the National Press Photographers Association three times and nine times for the White House News Photographers Association. In 2021, Carol received the WHNPA Lifetime Achievement Award and this year she won the prestigious Lucie Award for Achievement in Photojournalism.
