Points of Resonance:

Contemporary Photography in Africa

Points of Resonance: Contemporary Photography in Africa brings together the work of twelve artists living and working in Africa and the diaspora. First exhibited in Cairo in November 2023 under the auspices of the Afreximbank Art Programme, these artists whose work is often seen outside Africa, were invited to present collectively on the continent to foster cross-regional dialogues and celebrate the plurality of image-making. Exhibiting at The Africa Center, we now open the conversation to an even wider audience encompassing the multiplicity and vitality of the African diaspora in New York City.

Employing the language and tools of photography, the artists here explore the effects of colonialism, migration and changing identities. They deconstruct narratives by retelling stories
and collaging time and space. The works investigate the past, question memory and imagine
different possible futures. By looking through the lens of style, processes and themes, common links across the continent show how the various works resonate and echo each other,  amplifying our own struggles, dreams and aspirations. By resonating beyond our borders, they propel new narratives to global audiences.
