In a time of heightened tensions in society, we are focusing our lens on individuals interacting in a humane manner toward one another, or toward the viewer, as a way to counteract negative news stories. The goal is for the audience to connect to the image through an emotion — happiness, nostalgia, compassion, sadness, love — as a way to grow empathy toward others and highlight our shared stories.

ARTIST BIO

Donna Pinckley teaches photography at University of Central Arkansas and has received many awards, fellowships and honors over the years. From 1990 to 2008, Pinckley hosted 14 solo exhibitions, and her photographs are currently in the collections of six art museums. “Sticks and Stones” highlights the tensions and stories of interracial couples.

ORGANIZATION BIO

The Josephine Herrick Project commissions artists to teach photography to diverse communities. Celebrating its 75th year, JHP started when Josephine Herrick, a society photographer, taught photography to veterans in the VA hospitals during WWII.
