What makes a compelling photograph? Why are some concepts difficult to express visually? How can photographers introduce complex ideas into their work in coherent and captivating ways? Sybylla Smith answers all these questions with ‘Concept Aware’ — a roadmap of concept development that provides emerging and seasoned photographers practical tools to enhance their creative practice. By studying photo projects, through slideshows, samples of student work, and in a special tour of Photoville’s container exhibitions, participants will learn how to tackle complicated concepts and clearly implement them into their own work.

This is a BYOC (bring-your-own-camera) workshop that will meet for an intro and slideshow session in the Photoville Workshop Area before heading out for live shooting exercises and a tour of Photoville’s exhibitions. The workshop also includes an optional wrap-up session and casual group critique, where students can share work and ideas, and get feedback from instructors and workshop peers.
